Re-Bar

Yes, our tot lot was a mess for a long time with sand and rebar and large fences. I took out my old dog one morning and there were little kids in there who had climbed the fence and were inside with the rebar. I told them to get out, they were 2-6 years old. Otherwise I’d call their mothers.

It was seven in the morning. I did not know how to reach their mothers but they got out of the rebar and went home and called me every name known to mankind. I was now the witch that needed to be avoided at all costs. I just knew it was not safe in there and did not want to call an ambulance for a cut or rebar stick lest it hurt the kids.

Over the year our park was neglected. then finally padded footing was put in with plain vanilla slides et al. Nothing like I grew up with as a kid. The kids befriended my old dog Chani. They’re probably out of college and have wives and kids by now.

We were closest to two boys, Jessie and James. James was older and had a kind of gang of friends around. One day, Chani died. I rushed her to her doc but she’d bled out so we had to euthanize her. Friends came ’round to give their respects at the hospital, in the park and at the watering ceremony for the tree they gave our park in her memory.

I went out to our park and ran into Jessie right after she died, and his older brother James. I asked Jessie to come back behind the bushes with me. At six he was very manly. He did cry, then demanded to know exactly how Chani died. As a woman I did not understand this, and it led to seeing his big brother and his friends. Now. I’m going to yell at you for nothing “Don’t ever do that again!!!” so you can tell him about our Chani later.

A year later I lent them my breed book and they chose Sparky, a Jack Russell Terrier they named Sparky because of Dad, a sub sonar officer. They gave me back my book and I was the first person Sparky visited. Good friends. Here’s to good dogs! Dee

Being ‘haved

When my sister and I went to tell Mom on our little brother he’d run to see her first and say “Mommy, I’m not being haved.” And she’d tell him what a sweet young boy he was and we’d get extra chores.

His other infamous remark was “Who turned on the dark?” Leave it to him to see everything from another point of view. I do so as well and love my little brother even though he’s fifty now.

This little guest dog has become a diva. She got me up at 6 a.m. jumping on me, grabbing my arm and licking my hair, and we went out five times before 1 p.m. then she pooped all over my bedroom carpet. She wants to play with me, not Zoe our old dog and makes strange sounds.

After noon I told her she might be one Queen Bee, but I am Queen Dee, owner of this land and the power that is. It was a one-sided conversation mostly of “NO” but she hasn’t bothered me since and is sleeping on my pillows. All is well in the land at the moment.

I’m making myself steak and mashed potatoes and sauteed kale and garlic (dinosaur kale or cavolo nero in Italian) for dinner. She puts her nose on my plate. That’s something Queen Dee has not allowed and will not allow, ever.

This demure, beautiful, peaceful, courteous creature has become a monster and if I need to get out a crate, I will crate her. All Hail Queen Dee! After I feed them and take them out it’s my turn to eat. When one has an old herder one must stick to routine….. Dee

Brothers

They grew up together. Close but not too close. My husband was a human tornado and his younger brother was a neat guy. Go figure, I got the messy one.

Parents had to take 1″ off the bottom of the mirror in the boys’ bathroom from the human tornado.

After we met over 14 years ago (married 13 years this month), we’ve a dog, who will be 12 a week later, and no kids. We help our nephew in school.

I only had one brother. He was unfortunate enough to grow up with two elder sisters, me eldest, and one younger. He didn’t have the luxury of a brother.

These brothers got closer after they married and had shared interests. Before then younger would go out canoeing and deer hunting and older would spend time in the lab he created behind the milk barn.

We help each other out when we can. Husband and I help with private school for a very smart and talented young man. The gift has been reciprocated many times over as young brother actually calls me to see how I’m doing and shows us his son’s work.

They also watch each other’s six and take care of the women and kids and pets. Who could ask for anything more! Ira Gershwin would like that. Dee

Brothers

It’s now pouring rain here and the dog won’t want to go out to be involuntarily wet. Jumping into a swimming pool or great stream are voluntary efforts.

Lightning. That’s going to make Last Chance for dog Zoe interesting. I just got off the phone after a long conversation with my blood brother. We shared business and personal stories. I wish we could see him, he’s so smart and funny and I miss him.

My brother-in-law is also a brother who calls me more than my blood brother. He calls me “sis” and we talk about things as he drives. Another smart guy with a caring heart.

I think a lot of problems I had as a child would have been erased if I was not the eldest and had a big brother. We were in farm country and my sister and I used words, everyone else used intimidation or fists.

Now I’ve a dear husband, two brothers and I’ve the words to protect myself. Cheers, Dee
