Optics

The debate is over, probably the last debate between these presidential candidates. Was it good? No. Did I learn anything new? No. Did it change my vote? No.

We have here two older white men with varied expertise. One is a lawyer who has been well trained in legislating, mastery of foreign and domestic policy and a lifetime of leadership and, yes, statesmanship. The other is a real estate developer who has had middling success at business, having been given a major leg up by his inheritance, and a lifetime of conning people into giving him money, topped off by great training as a reality tv host. Are either eloquent speakers? I think not.

The pundits have been handicapping this debate for months. I don’t think you need 23 cable tv hosts (crammed behind the same desk) live telling you everything they think about what the debate participants are saying. Plus, the Friday morning quarterbacking was insane. I know you get paid to hear yourselves talk but, please. Give it a rest.

In the end, these are the two people we voters have a choice for, for president of the United States. They’re the same people they were 24 hours ago before the debate, and tomorrow morning they’ll still be the same people with the same qualifications.

Yes, I believe that Joe Biden flubbed a lot of opportunities given to him by his opponent with his firehose of falsehoods. He could have been over-prepared, or his brain was just working too fast for his words to catch up. I know the feeling. But a former president, who wants to be re-elected, lied so many times I couldn’t even count them. And many were stupid lies, about losing the 2020 election, abiding by the vote count in 2024, even saying that Democrats are “for” murdering infants. Presidents should not be in the business of lying to the American people, look at what that did to the country during COVID.

The debate was neither man’s best performance, but let’s take it for what it was, a performance. It’s not what presidents are judged on. Presidents are decision-makers who have a wealth of information at their fingertips to make the best decisions for the American people. All Americans, not black or white, red or blue.

We can have a man who has served the American people all his life, surrounds himself with the best and most knowledgeable people, represents all Americans and will fight to preserve and defend our democracy. The other is a convicted criminal who tried to overturn the last election that he lost fair and square, who surrounds himself with sycophants and will repopulate the administrative state with theocrats and party loyalists who have no expertise in gene sequencing or meteorology or anything substantive and only wants to help rich, white MAGA Republicans. It’s an easy choice for me.

Heaven forbid, if Joe Biden kicks the bucket in his next term, we all know his VP, who has been vetted and is up to the task. With Trump, we might end up with Ivanka, Don Jr. or even Eric.

Yesterday was a day in the life. I’m a lifelong Buffalo Bills fan. Yes, they lost the Superbowl, more than once, but they got up the next day and fought on. Joe Biden’s been here before, and been underestimated before. Stop wringing your hands, Democrats. Joe Biden has given America over fifty years of his life. We can allow him an off-night. Think, and vote. That’s today’s Dee-ism.

Crassus, Redux?

Finally, I have an answer. I asked myself, why the need for mass concentration camps across the United States? Donald Trump, as is his wont, answered my question sanely and succinctly. Migrant fight camps. After all, why not round up our best non-native born housekeepers and landscapers and make them fight to the death for our amusement? They’re all mass murderers, rapists and psychopaths, anyway. Phew. And I thought he wouldn’t have a good answer!

I’ve a way to make the Fourth Reich even better. Separate the camps into mini-camps. The press camp would start with Bob Woodward, who Trump thought liked him until those fun interviews became a book. Throw in the entire staff of Pro Publica, all democrat reporters and those at Fox who don’t go the extra mile to make Trump look really good.

Then there would be the Expert sub-camp, led by the hated Dr. Fauci, who has saved gays from AIDS and entirely too many from being culled by COVID. Toss in anyone, from medical researchers to meteorologists, product testers, anyone who really knows anything about anything.

The Religion sub-camp would include all priests, imams, rabbis, and any protestant who doesn’t specifically toe the MAGA party line. Plus any philosophers, we can’t have that. May as well add anyone capable of independent thought, including all Democrats. I changed my mind, this is an entire camp, not a sub-camp. Everyone here will be in solitary confinement, as we can’t afford to have them talking to each other.

Another camp specifically for women. Uppity Black women, in particular. Now people would pay double to see these women fight to the death! Triple, even! Tish James vs. Fani Willis as the Main Event!!! Ini bikinis, in Jello. Of course Tanya Chutkan would be tossed in there preemptively because she’s sure to rule against Our Dear Leader. This camp would not be limited to lawers and judges, however. There’s plenty of room for women who want to keep the right to vote, bodily autonomy, financial independence, the right to not be killed by domestic violence. Also every women’s libber who ever lived on the planet.

Lastly, a camp for anyone who ever agreed with our founding fathers that there is a really good reason to separate church and state. That would include any democrat politician and all RINO’s. And anyone in the military who believes his/her oath of office is sacrosanct and will not obey an illegal order from Dear Leader.

Now that they’re all rounded up, the middle of the country is filled with MAGA undesirables, Reich IV can take the coasts. All the universities and prime military bases (Coronado and its golf course among them) have been vacated so there’s space for the faithful. Washington, D.C. is desolate so Marjory Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert, who now run the city, have agreed to guest star in a special event at the arena that’ll be more popular than a Taylor Swift concert. Trump can’t decide whether to train them in pistols or swords, but promises it’ll be extra special and televised for an extraordinary fee that will be used to pay Trump’s legal bills and shore up his tanking DJT stock.

Hope this sounds good to you. All this activity will give us time to initiate the real plan. For the little people who don’t matter to billionaires or small-minded, myopic pols, I am… Spartacus

ps I hope all y’all are Spartacus, too.

Another Horrible Day

in Milwaukee. Today there’s a music festival in the neighborhood spanning seven stages with a number of local bands to showcase and tons of vendors. I think we’ll venture out this afternoon, the horrible weather will be sunny and in the low 70’s, before the heat wave hits tomorrow for the foreseeable future. But rest assured, a sweltering summer like we’ve never experienced should not be equated with any climate crisis caused by burning excessive fossil fuels.

We’ll probably run into our horrible neighbors, because who but horrible peoplle, as described by one Donald J Trump, would live here? Mr. Trump is expected to bring his felonious reputation and fellow felons to town next month to be crowned king of the Republican National Committee and its nominee for King of America, or should I say president. One step at a time, buster.

I’m told different stories by his enablers about why he called Milwaukee, his kind host for the 2024 RNC Convention, a horrible city. They can’t seem to get their answers straight. What I read through the inevitable cover-up is that it is because of: violent crime, and that rate has plummeted since Trump was president last time; and something about the 2020 presidential election being rigged, even though the Trump campaign’s own recount of Milwaukee and Madison showed that Biden won fair and square.

In fact, when Trump plans to be in town next month for the convention, his mere presence will increase the crime statistics, because so many of his business and campaign associates are also felons. Then there are all the as-yet unindicted ones, many who still hold elective office, who have been with him lock, stock and barrel in The Big Lie since its inception.

In Milwaukee if I am mailed an absentee ballot, I have to fill it out in front of a witness, sign and date it and have the witness do the same. Then I have to make sure the Board of Elections has a valid copy of my Wisconsin drivers’ license with photo on file showing current address, with proof of said address via a bill or official document sent to my home. Then, because drop boxes are now illegal and the mail is uncertain to be received in time to be counted, I have to drive downtown to the main election office and go up to the fifth floor and hand-deliver my ballot.

Then, I have to go back down to the idling car where my husband is with our dog (who we can’t leave in the car because it’s too cold in November) and sit there while he hand-delivers his ballot. Why? Because otherwise I could be convicted of “ballot harvesting” even though he is my legal witness to said document and I am his.

Welcome to being a registered voter in Wisconsin! Whenever I can, I vote in person as the precinct location is walkable and the poll workers amiable. I deliver my absentee ballot, unopened, and assure that it is voided, then I am issued a new ballot to fill out. Upon watching my ballot go into the counting machine I am given my “I Voted” sticker, thank all the poll workers for their service (followed by an email to the Board of Elections thanking everyone) and promptly lose the sticker in the snow/wind as I walk home.

The irony of all this double-checking and proof of this and that is that ballots received prior to election day are not allowed to be opened until the polls open on election day. That is not for “election integrity” at all. It was devised probably by the RNC so they could say mail ballots are fraudulent and so that someone like Donald J Trump, as he did on election night in 2020, can say that he won and to STOP COUNTING BALLOTS! And you wonder how The Big Lie got started.

Question. If Donald Trump won the presidency in 2020, why weren’t any down-ballot races investigated? Doesn’t it seem odd that ONLY Donald Trump was cheated that year? Just like all the investigations into this particular president’s attempts to steal the 2020 election (federal and state cases pending), steal top secret documents that belong to the American people (case pending) and illegally influence the 2016 presidential election (guilty, 34 federal felony counts) are “politically motivated?”

Maybe rural Wisconsonites will vote for Trump regardless of his thoughtless comments on its most populous city, but that’s OK. They’ll like him until he tariffs their farms out of existence. Perhaps a day will dawn when they finally realize Trump doesn’t care a whit about them, their businesses or their lives and only cares for his own and that of his rich donors. He said it himself last weekend, he doesn’t care at all about his voters, he only wants their votes. What you see is what you get.

The sun is up, dog is fed and walked and the windows are open bringing in fresh lake air before closing up for the summer. Lest people from outside Milwaukee think it an urban hellscape, I assure you it is not. I don’t trip over homeless people outside our building or worry about being robbed while walking to the market. There are people walking everywhere, many with canine companions, and families grilling picnics in the local park. Tennis players at public courts across the road. Music and arts and even kite festivals. And here, a lot of houses have front porches where people can hang out and watch the world go by. It’s summertime, school’s out and it’s time to put the top down or dust off your Harley for a beautiful, sunny day. Vote! Dee

Life in a “Horrible” City

The sun will be up earlier again today, 5:11 a.m. to be exact. With a herding dog (Miniature Australian Shepherd) who swears by routine, when the sun comes up a walk must be taken then breakfast (hers, naturally), made with all due haste.

After I dress and open windows (when it’s cool enough) to air out, and cover some artwork to protect it from damage from the blistering morning sun, we’ll set out on the morning routine.

We’ve a stellar view of Lake Michigan toward the northeast. A block away begins a string of County parks designed by Frederick Law Olmstead of New York’s Central Park fame. Or we can go down to the lake and watch the boats. Or walk up by the University. So many choices. Lulu doesn’t care as long as the morning walk is brief so she can get to the important stuff, like food.

But I like early morning walks, with the dew on the grass and another day to plan while breathing in the lake air and enjoying the respite being along the shoreline brings from the hottest weather yet to come this summer.

The City has spent months preparing for the Republican National Convention, here in just a few weeks. Back in 2020 we planned in the same manner for the Democratic National Convention, scheduled to be here but was mostly done remotely because of COVID. Cities strut out their best for the conventions, and businesses and political parties expect a financial benefit as well as the usual puffery about staging a successful national convention.

That’s why we were so shocked to hear Donald Trump call Milwaukee a “horrible city” yesterday. Out loud. And all the Republican elected officials in the State of Milwaukee made excuses for this inexusable slap in the face to his host city. Now Donald Trump says it’s all cities and it’s about crime. Aside from him visiting as a newly-convicted felon, serious crimes in Milwaukee have gone down by double digits since he was president.

Perhaps Donald Trump wants to start a crime wave in Milwaukee? So many of his work and campaign buddies are already felons. If so, he should stay home. I feel safe here. I walk alone with the dog, and she’d just as soon wiggle her butt (no tail on an Aussie) and get petted than protect me from a potential assailant. In my years as a temporary resident here, I’ve never been afraid in my neighborhood or what Trump thinks is its scary downtown near Fiserv Forum, where the Convention will take place.

Milwaukee is a beautiful city, especially this time of year. I’m a Great Lakes kind of gal, having grown up on Lake Erie. From my earliest years until recently, all I really had to do was switch from the Bills to the Packers, not a real stretch as the Packers were always my second choice in the playoffs when my Bills didn’t make it. There’s the same Northern spirit, with brutally cold, snowy winters contrasted with that much more-appreciated warmer seasons. There’s art and theater, even music at Summerfest, beer and brats. And cheese.

Shame on Donald Trump for denigrating his host city. One wouldn’t think he has to win Wisconsin in order to become president again, eviscerate the Constitution, send women back to the dark ages and make sure he doesn’t spend a day in the Big House (not the White House). Vote as if your life depends upon it. Because it does. Dee

Two Kids from Queens

Donald Trump was born and raised in Queens, NY, in a very nice neighborhood and went to private schools. He was desperate to get out and take over the Manhattan real estate industry and be accepted by the elite society folk. He didn’t, and he wasn’t.

When he looked for a lawyer he didn’t look for a Roy Cohn, he got THE Roy Cohn. Accountants? How about Borgers, who his media empire just had to fire because the SEC has them on the hook for massive fraud. Choosing an accounting firm because of their willingness to commit fraud should be a major red flag for doing business with or buying this new meme stock.

I know another guy, born about fifteen years before Mr. Trump, in Ridgewood, Queens. Ridgewood was then a neighborhood of German immigrants. My grandfather fled the Hitler’s Brownshirts in the 1920’s, illegally entered the US where he met and married a Swiss emigré and they had my Dad, who grew up speaking only German in the home. Dad attended public grade school and Grover Cleveland High School and dreamed of being the first in his family to ever go to college.

He did that, played his fiddle and called square dances to get through college, got out of Queens and achieved a Masters and Doctorate, became a college president and nationally known non-profit leader. When he started his own consulting business at age sixty, his lawyer was a decent one who could help with client contracts and special projects, and his accountant was my Mom, who became a CPA having graduated college the same year I did. She graduated Summa cum Laude, me just Deans’ List. They raised four kids who do OK.

There are a lot of good people in Queens. People who live normal lives, teach school or work for the fire department, or own a local business. Their lives are lived on the up-and-up, crossing at the crosswalk, paying their taxes and raising families.

The so-called hush money trial going on in lower Manhattan the past few weeks is somewhat of a comeuppance for a guy who got too big for his britches and who, unfortunately, has never paid the price for a single misdeed. The details are so sordid and tawdry that it makes me blush, no, it makes me want to take a long, hot shower. A gentleman doesn’t ask a lady to dinner and answer the door in silk pyjamas. Ick. He doesn’t get undressed while she’s in the bathroom and block her from leaving, with his bodyguard outside the door, or seduce/coerce her into sleeping with him to get out of the trailer park. In the end, she didn’t even get dinner, just seventeen years of paying for one stupid mistake.

Lies, cheating, cover-ups, hush money. It’s no way to live a life. It’s no example to set for one’s children, and certainly not “qualities” that should define the president of the free (at least for now) world. Sad to say, I’m not shocked or surprised at Donald Trump’s panoply of nefarious deeds. I spent a couple of years in the NYC real estate industry (trade group) in the 80’s and no-one had anything good to say about Trump even back then. And these were his peers.

What hurts me, as a woman who grew up in the era of ERA and reproductive rights is the imperiousness, the intended cruelty, the derogation of ALL women by this deeply flawed, weak bully. To think that his misogynistic attitude has become mainstream and that all the rights women have earned are on the chopping block (abortion, contraception, interstate travel, privacy, no-fault divorce) even by the Supreme Court is unconscionable.

My German grandfather was an illegal immigrant, a fleer of Hitler’s upcoming dictatorship. My mother, a Canadian citizen and US Green Card holder for her last fifty years, has left me an option. I’d like to fight for my country and womens’ and voting rights but if we lose, I suppose I can learn all the lyrics to O Canada.

Just because I’m not shocked by Trump’s sordid deeds or gilt-encrusted life, doesn’t mean I understand or condone it. After all, what would my Auntie L say, the lady who reinforced etiquette and assured that I could walk across the room with a dictionary balanced upon my head? To simpler days… ahead. Cheers! Dee

Trump’s Greatest Threat

Have you ever been called to jury duty? I have only been called twice, over thirty years apart. The first time I was in my mid-twenties and actively writing ground-breaking legislation to assist crime victims so of course the defense kicked me out right off the bat. I think I would be a good juror as I am able to sift through and distill information and judge whether someone is telling the truth by the evidence presented. Maybe not, perhaps I’ll never know.

Walking into a courtroom is impressive and awe-inspiring. When the judge walks into the room, it’s a spectacle. You want to be on your best behavior and ready to obey his/her commands. It’s a sobering experience and makes one think of the importance of civic duty, and the reality of right and wrong.

The second time I was out of options to delay, because I was right out of the hospital after a traumatic brain injury and still, as my husband says, “rebooting.” They probably wouldn’t have gotten the benefit of my full deductive reasoning in that trial, but in voir dire I was asked if I’d ever had a bad experience with the police. I had, a group of off-duty cops killed my friend in high school and never paid the price for their wanton cruelty to a seventeen year-old kid. So the prosecution kicked me off first chance they got, even though I have a healthy respect for police in general.

Some think that if one gets a “New York” jury or one from a significantly “red” state the verdict will go a particular way. That’s not the case. Even in a high profile trial, many questions are asked to assure that the juror will be impartial, even if they have been exposed to information about the defendant or alleged crime.

Donald Trump has reason to be afraid. His second E. Jean Carroll jury was mostly male, mostly white. They judged him by his actions, including his antics in the courtroom where his arrogance and lack of respect for judge and jury were evident. He will pay the price, a steep one.

Voir dire. Juries. Right and wrong. Justice. Weighty subjects. Regular people who know right from wrong, lies from truth, will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Think back to who brought you back in line when you strayed even a little. Parents, a stern aunt, grandparents leading from example, a teacher who saw potential in you even when you didn’t. Tell the truth. Don’t gossip or say bad things about your neighbor. Be as nice to the store clerk as you are to the manager. Always say please and thank you. Respect your elders. Don’t talk during Mass, and how did you lose your gloves? Quick, take one of your sister’s and hold it so it’ll look like you each have a pair.

We were motivated to stay on the straight and narrow to earn the respect of our parents, priests (I don’t know if anyone ever got on a nun’s good side. tee hee), teachers and friends. Motivation is individual, but as a lapsed Catholic, shame was a great motivator as a child. That and being the eldest sibling, always setting a good example. Man, that was a pain but I did it, because it was expected of me.

My two juror experiences are the only ones I’ve had with the justice system as a whole. I did get one speeding violation for trying to get to class on time, when in college, but that was just a small fine so I didn’t have to go to court or anything.

When it comes to the civil trials of Donald Trump, the wheels of justice grind slowly, but grind they do. Donald Trump has shown disdain for the American justice system and all who serve it, and seeks to bend the law to his will. In my mind, and as I’m not a juror I can say this, he has gotten away with wanton lawlessness for decades in the real estate business and in life. Karma has been waiting around the corner, but never this close, so he’s lashing out.

If he becomes president again, heaven forbid, he will inflict his hatred of American democracy further on we, the people. There are 91 criminal charges remaining to be litigated, and it’s not just money he’ll lose in these trials. He could lose his freedom for defrauding the American people and placing our national security at risk by illegally maintaining classified government documents.

Picture yourself in a courtroom as a potential juror about to be selected and being given the awesome responsibility of deeming a defendant innocent or guilty. It’ll bring you back to the childhood dinner table and learning right from wrong. School days, Bible study. It makes one think about what it means to be an American citizen, the duties it entails and the benefits it brings by virtue of our Constitution.

I see voting in that light, as well. Who we vote for matters. As a government policy analyst I joined a women’s political group. Come election time we interviewed local candidates. There was much debate over our biggest race, for state senate or assembly, I think. The male candidate checked the box on all our positions. The woman, few boxes and was actively anti- in several important aspects such as women’s bodily autonomy. The majority voted to endorse the woman simply because we were a women’s group. My colleague and I quit the group then and there. We found the policies more important than the gender of the candidate and made our stand. It’s those kinds of decisions that make me, me.

In this polarized political climate, courage has been in short supply, especially by elected officials (Congress, that’s you). In my humble opinion, if one has a moral compass and knows right from wrong, truth from lies, going along to get along from adoration or fear is no excuse.

Trump went down legally and owes nearly $90 million so far not because of partisan witch hunts or crooked judges. He lost fair and square because regular people who became jurors weighed the evidence and did their job. The more regular people who go back to basics, the moral compass that has steered them through life and work, and apply it to the voting booth, the more votes Trump will lose. That’s what he’s afraid of. That, and prison. And my policy position is that presidents are elected to do the people’s business, not use the nation’s highest office to absolve themselves of wrongdoing, make money on the side, and punish anyone who ever stood up to them.

My thoughts on a warming Wednesday morning, perhaps we’ll even see a bit of sun for a change! Lulu the dog would like that as she misses her buds. Cheers! Dee

Bullies and The Cardinal Rule

You can’t let a bully get away with it!

You might not be able to protect your lunch money from the bully on day one, but you’d better have a plan for day two, otherwise he’ll steal it every day and for the entire school year until you grow 6″ taller and are recruited as a tackle for the football team.

Two bullies took my winter hat (I was eight years old) on the bus and teased me all the way to school before ripping my hat in two. I was sobbing when I got off the bus and was taken to the principal’s office to identify the brothers who did it. The offenders’ family didn’t have a phone and any mail notice that was sent, including their grades, never made it home to Mom. Suffice it to say, even the principal was afraid of them. Today, I’d opine that both of them are in jail and their elderly mother sits on what’s left of a rickety front porch with an AR-15 that she’d use on the mailman if he ever got close enough.

Lo and behold, two families down the country road owned a dairy, each family had 8 kids, 12 of which were school age. Some of the boys were older than the two offenders. I never knew this for sure but something tells me they faced up to the offenders and the mean boys never so much as talked to me again, much less laid a finger on me. Dee 1, Bullies 1, plus Dee is guaranteed protection through high school. Win!

For nearly 80 years, Donald Trump has never paid the price for any of his nefarious deeds, and there have been more than you and I will never know about. Finally, one person has stood up to him and won, an 80 year-old woman who he sexually assaulted, and also defamed not once, but repeatedly.

Trump used Russia to win in 2016. Result? Mueller investigation was DOA due to AG Bill Barr.

Trump blackmailed Ukraine for dirt on Joe Biden. Result? Senate Republicans didn’t have the guts to convict.

Trump used several means to commit treason, attempting to disenfranchise 82 million voters and prohibit a legal transfer of power to his legitimately elected successor, Joe Biden. Result? Once again, the Republican Senate didn’t have the guts to convict him. Now he claims total immunity for treason and is the frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination.

Trump claims total immunity for everything illegal he and his cronies did before, during and after his presidency, and also claims that he has the right to be on the presidential ballot throughout the nation even though he has committed an insurrection. Result? We’ll see if our SCOTUS has the guts to do what needs to be done before Trump gets elected and becomes our first of many dictators, or loses and puts the country through hell by bullying his way back into the White House to pardon himself.

Bullies never stop of their own volition. They need to be stopped before the damage becomes too great to bear. BTW, these cases could be in court forever, because Trump’s not paying the price, his campaign donors are. Haven’t the American people had enough? Think about it before you vote. Dee

Freedom and Light

Everything is black. There is light above, in the distance, shining through shards of glass and pieces of canvasses covered with my favorite art, Renaissance and Impressionist, all triangular and just out of reach. I reach for the next one, it’s circling and its sharp edges cannot be reached. Jumping now, I grab it and begin to pull myself up.

Bright light intervenes and I’m in a beautiful setting with palm trees and sand, then I awaken in my old cement block college dorm room and there’s a blow-up palm tree sitting on my desk with a paper I’ve yet to finish. Repeat ad nauseum.

Finally, I emerge into the light, and am free. See, I’ve been a coma for a month, trapped in my mind and body and unable to get out. One thing I remember clearly is a blank grey space into which I said “If this is death, I need to go back, I’ve got stuff to do.” And I do.

For three months after I awoke, I was told I was the hardest working patient on the brain trauma floor. Near the end of my confinement a shrink who should lose his license said to all the other doctors and therapists, in front of me: “Is this the smart one? Well, she’ll never get out of here or will spend her days in a place just like this and no, she’ll never drive again.”

Two weeks later I was home. A month after that I passed my driving test (tester said it was like I’d never been away) and then as a ward of the state I was supposed to show up in court so I could be institutionalized. I called my state attorney and he said he forgot to contact the court to have my status reversed. I told him I would represent myself and my husband was on the road but would be at court virtually. Oops! In one fell swoop, my identity, no, existence, was erased. They sent a lawyer to evaluate me surreptitiously. Mom taught me to be a great hostess so I asked him if he’d like me to brew him some tea, he sat down and discussed the weather then quickly excused himself, knowing I was sane and would be fine.

Perhaps the injury jiggled things around a bit but I had a cataract and after surgery for that, I was able to get corrective lenses and read and therefore write again. Thank you, WordPress, for being here still for my return. Someone stole my blog address while I was gone but I was able to change to a .com instead of .net and everything for the past ten years came back to me. Writers block kept me away for a while.

But I wasn’t afraid of much else, as a death scare tends to put things into perspective. Like for nearly everyone else, 2020 was mostly bad with decent health but no work. Politics became more of an interest, but that’s because I like to imagine my way around sticky situations. Always a problem-solver, I also think outside the box (now, literally).

It bothers me that I live in a swing state and for months our president, US senator and state legislature have tried to illegally rob me of my vote. My vote is my voice, a precious thing. I spent a month convincing myself to get out of my own way to be free. If I can do that, I can do anything. I’m pretty stubborn, ask my husband if you still don’t believe me!

I believe that we have rights and should be able to exercise those rights in a lawful fashion. We live in a democracy that awards us certain freedoms and with freedom comes responsibility. We vote for people to represent us and maintain our rights. If they choose not to represent us fairly and tell us the truth, we have a right to un-elect them through the ballot box or even a recall election if their faults are egregious.

This has been a dark year for our country and for the world. Judging from our democracy, many of its leaders have not dealt with the challenges well. It is our responsibility to assure that we have people in leadership positions to help us through these dark times so we all can see the light.

As I see it, it’s not about Democrat or Republican, it’s now about America. This week’s activities to overthrow our government should scare all of us. We must do better. We must meet in the middle and fix this mess, and we must start by accepting the truth. On January 20, our country is going to be on a new path, whether one likes it or not. Americans, starting with President Trump, can no longer pretend that Donald Trump will be leading this country at 12:01 p.m. next Wednesday. Alternate reality is not reality, folks.

After my dark year, a year before COVID-19 shattered our lives and livelihoods, I had a chance to strive for light. Our old dog Zoe was with me at the hospital but died before I awakened. She was a gift we named “Zoe,” Greek for life when we adopted her fifteen years earlier. Our old girl could never be replaced but on December 31, 2019 a puppy was born. Eight weeks later Lulu came home with us to start a new chapter. Lucia, Italian for “bringer of light.” Zoe would have approved.

I’m looking forward to light, and freedom. And a COVID vaccine shot. I’ll wait my turn for the vaccine, but not for the rest. Buon’anno, Dee

Have you no shame,

Mr. President? Of course you don’t, it was a rhetorical question.

Saturday you openly threatened Georgia’s Secretary of State if he would not steal votes to give you a second term. Today, you riled up your base, told them you would never concede your loss of the presidency, and urged them to march to the U.S. Capitol and tell Congress what they think. Well, they did, to disastrous results.

You placed thousands of lives in danger, including your own Vice President and leaders and members of the House and Senate. Your thugs stormed the House and Senate chambers and one person is now fighting for her life after being shot at the Capitol.

You must stop this nonsense right now. You just said a few words to encourage peace but still said that the election was fraudulent. You lost, Mr. President. fair and square. In two weeks we’ll have a new administration and you’ll be gone, along with all your hired sycophants. There will, unfortunately, still be seditionists holding office down the street from the White House, the ones who’ll be voted out of office in 2022 for forgetting that their allegiance is to the Constitution and constituency, not you.

Stop this Electoral College charade and ackowledge that you lost the election fair and square. Isn’t it enough that your supporters have granted you a $250 million severance package? You and you alone lost your election. Live with it. You and your seditionist senators and congressmen and women are responsible for today’s insurrection at the Capitol.

Enough is enough. Your fifteen minutes of fame are over. Oh, and please take the kids with you and surrender their keys to the White House. Hopefully none of them will ever see the inside of that building again. And stop trying to steal my vote. For now, I’m living in a swing state and am sick and tired of hearing that you or our legislature want to take my vote away. Stop it. Now. Thank you.

Fate

When I went to the grocery store today, without the dog…. Let me go back. I did not have the dog with me because it was too warm for her to stay in the car although she loves “coming with.” I paid for 30 minutes on the meter and got back with 20 left.

The owner of a gorgeous rescued Greyhound came up to me (and let me pet his dog). As a volunteer for rescued Greys for six years it was a treat for me. He told me the city had just banned dogs on outside restaurant patios. Also, that businesses are not allowed to place a water bowl for dogs outside their door.

Two more men came up to me and told me the same story. Why? Kindred spirit? Again, I was not with my dog. They urged me to take action. I’ve tried to find the new law, have emailed the Commissioner and our Alderman to find out the truth about what’s happening in our district.

What I’ve said is that we have a couple months of summer, one each spring and fall and the rest is winter. People bike (cycles and Harleys), run, walk dogs and eat outdoors at restaurants with their dogs. There is a very slim window for us to do so. For our city, county or state to deny this to its tax paying, law-abiding, voting responsible dog owners does not make sense.

My dinner was beautiful sea scallops sauteed on the stove, with room temp marble potatoes and asparagus from yesterday. Yum. I made my own fresh bread crumbs from a brioche roll and dinner was delicious. Cheers! Dee
