Welcome to the blog

Trades

Do you know one of 199 reasons I love my husband? He went to the movie theater not once, but twice to see Memoirs of a Geisha with me.

Yes, we switch, he gets one and I get one but this was painful for him.

I now know nearly every word of Star Wars: Episode 4 and actually choose to watch it in the middle of the night when he is asleep.

Of course I’m into oldies, indies, drama, history, rom com. He likes more action and violence. So we trade. Get married 10 years and it’ll all sort itself out. Dee

Couples and Dogs

Months ago I was on a bridge with our dog and I saw a couple down below on the trail with their two old dogs a few hundred feet away, with their backs towards us and thought of our future.

Immediately I thought that I would love to take the dog out in the morning for a walk with my husband, but that’s not possible most days.

Then the couple and I said hello with the dogs every few months and I felt a familiarity with them.

It turns out that we’re neighbors again, 35 years later. We finally met and realized how we know each other. We got to meet their dogs and now I’ve hopes of seeing them again on the trail.

I would also like to someday realize that dream someday of my husband and I walking a trail with a dog, together. Let’s do it for a hip-less Aussie/X, Dee

Shopping With Dee

I hate clothes shopping, and shoes? Forget it. Yes, every husband’s dream, a wife who hates to shop. I don’t mind shopping for him as shopping for men is easy. I can buy him everything but pants, suits and dress shoes. Like a squirrel I just got two extra pairs of walking/dog walking shoes so we can “shop” in our closet and have him nice and comfy for the next couple of years because they closed out the style.

Grocery shopping is fun. Hopefully I’ll have time to make fresh rhubarb and a custard for dessert tonight. That’s an homage to Mom who died five years ago tomorrow. Also my lasagne which will take more than ten minutes because I have to boil the noodles.

I do love seeing what’s fresh and new at the grocery while coming up with what to cook tonight. But… the newest spot is La Terrazza. Yes, the terrace where we live and last year at my suggestion they put in several large pots with chives, thyme, oregano, basil, cilantro and parsley. I keep them from going to seed too soon (missed the cilantro, sorry) and pick from this garden regularly. Now that’s my kind of shopping. Herby fingers or a nice pair of scissors and dinner is complete. Tonight I’ve basil, oregano and parsley all sitting in a glass on the kitchen counter.

I’ll work on the vanilla custard now and get the lasagne noodles boiling so my love can start enjoying the weekend. First I must brush out Zoe. She has to look pretty because tomorrow we’re going to try to go to our first Blessing of the Animals at St. Francis. He is my favorite saint because of his care for people and animals.

The first prayer is for Shannon, the ten year-old dog of two dear friends from across this land, who is struggling for her life today.

Beware Zoe, ye who loves a bath but not Dee’s torture chamber of combs and brushes! Be well, Dee

PS No animals are to be harmed as a result of this post. Dee is just removing the end of the second undercoat of the summer so the third one can grow in and Zoe can be ready for cooler weather. D

It’s Gonna Be a Bright Sun-shiny day

I can see clearly now. the rain is gone. I can see all obstacles in my way…..

Our windows were finally cleaned on the outside yesterday. The insides were tackled today and in well over a year I have never had a view I have today.

We always have other obstacles but seeing through a clear window toward the view we pay to see is amazing. These guys didn’t bother to call or show up last year. This year I had nine ways to make sure everything went OK and it did.

I believe a year-end farewell is due to our educational schooner. Sailors are still out there but extra mats are coming in, and squirrels are fattening up and gaining food so winter is coming.

I can see clearly now, my windows are clean, I can see all obstacles in my way, Dee

Taste Memories

Back to age 16 and Mom (she died five years ago this week, RIP) was going to school so my sister A and I had to cook dinner twice a week. We made two things, she did mac & cheese and I did a tuna “souffle.”

Today I had a craving for tuna but too much is going on so I had some fruit and yogurt instead. My husband can’t eat anything that swims so I may make it tomorrow for lunches next week.

While I’m a good cook and can make a bechamel sauce in my sleep, this one called for one can of cream of celery soup and I wanted that flavor I remember. Oh! In Mom’s things I was sent a plastic case with 1970’s recipes! Let me check.

I know there are two cans of drained tuna, three egg yolks, lemon juice and the can of cream of celery soup. Then we hand-whipped the three whites, folded them in and baked it in a loaf pan.

Nope, I’ll have to figure it out on my own. It’s not in the box with tri-level brownies, ham stacks, “health soup”or  Joanie’s Chicken.

Oh, this box may be a great entree to our new adventure! Dee

Third Time a Charm?

Today is disrespect Dee Day.

It started at seven this morning. I always have a song in my heart, every morning and today it was Harry Chapin’s Taxi. I sang a few poignant words to the guys downstairs “She said how are you Harry, I said how are you Sue, Through the too many miles and two little smiles I still remember you.”

They looked at me blankly. I said that it was a 70’s song, probably before they were born, and they replied “Yeah WAY before.”

Then I finally got to the grocery where pumpkins and gourds are all over the place. I was looking at them and a woman came by that looked older than me and I asked “Does anyone do pumpkins anymore?” She replied “I do, but I have kids.” Ding #2. She didn’t have any kids with her and neither did I. Where is this coming from? I buy candy every year and no-one ever comes even though every kid in the neighborhood knows me, loves our dog and knows where we live.

I’m waiting for the third slam as things as bad things come in threes, which should be a doozie. Luckily my brother-in-law doesn’t read this blog else he’d make something up to break the bank. Calling me “sis” has its advantages!

As far as songs go I can’t predict what my mind will select but next week it may turn to the person formerly known as Cat Stevens, now Yusuf Islam. something from Tea for the Tillerman, anyone? I love having young whippersnappers tell me how old I am.

Regardless of negative comments I’m thinking about taking you with me on a journey with perhaps a slightly different storyline as I’ll be sued for publishing recipes online even with proper attribution.  The Feminist Homemaker got me hired at Sundance as a PR volunteer. If the title alone could make Sundance call me for two hour-long interviews it’s OK with me.

Hope you’re having a great day. I’m also hoping the interior window cleaners will actually show up (they didn’t last year) because the outside folks did that yesterday and it would be nice to actually see the view we pay for! Cheers, Dee

OK, I’m Back

I will be changing the name and format this weekend. Too much on my plate right now.

There are still more stories to tell, like Gov. Rick Perry of TX ads recruiting in the northeast for people to move to Texas. I wrote in telling him if you have the right job at the right pay level we may consider his offer.

His office wrote back “Thank you for contacting the Office of the Governor. Your opinion will be reviewed by the appropriate staff member.
This message has been automatically generated. Please do not respond to this email.”

Welcome to Texas all y’all! Drive friendly. It’s the law. Dee

I Did It!

The last one was my 2,000th post and I swore to retire. I will miss you, dear reader, for your pithy comments (my aunt made me read the dictionary while using her bathroom, she was an English teacher) and friendship.

How about giving me a well-deserved vacation and I’ll decide whether to resume this, change the name or focus or just keep being Dee. I still have the site and of course I’ll let you know.

I’ve had a wonderful few years hearing from you and reading your blogs and will keep this site open for you to tell me to keep on writing!

Thank you for letting me learn how to write from the heart without fear, express myself, and not be so shy anymore. Thanks for letting me use this site to talk about politics, bullying, family, childhood and dogs as well as cooking.

My husband created this site for me six years ago and I was so scared to write on it, but How To Eat a Concord Grape was my first foray and it’s above and beyond my most popular post, especially in grape season and everyone wants to know whether or not to eat the seeds. I’d say be outdoors, follow my instructions and spit them out.

I am glad to have been useful, perhaps for dinner ideas, insightful thoughts and a little wisdom here and there.

With a blog there’s always something left on your “desk,” and an old friend of my Dad’s once told him: never stay late to clean your desk on a Friday. It’ll give you something to do on Monday. If you clean it all up you may die over the weekend. That is a very bad rendition (mine) of an old Irish proverb.

My desk is messy and I like it that way as it gives me something to think about. Cheers and Thanks, Dee

New Pizza Chez Dee

Check out Epicurious for their sweet potato and kale pizza. http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Sweet-Potato-and-Kale-Pizza-51188430?mbid=rotdNL&spMailingID=5743263&spUserID=MzA1MDEwNjQ1MDQS1&spJobID=338388432&spReportId=MzM4Mzg4NDMyS0

I’ve changed everything up for mine. First I made the dough from Italian OO flour and organic whole wheat flour. It’s rising now but worked beautifully from the start.

The other day I roasted a butternut squash to use for soup but now I’m using it for pizza. I’ve a bit of fresh mozzarella cheese and some feta, and will saute some cavolo nero (Italian black kale or dinosaur kale) with a bit of garlic. I’ll serve it with a salad of baby arugula.

Dough rose beautifully and rolled out like a dream. It’s in the oven now. Butternut squash paste, mozz, sauteed cavolo nero and feta, with a bit of black pepper on top. We’ll see.

Remember Me Thursday…Every Day

September 26 is the day to remember shelter pets. We’re supposed to light a candle for those who have died due to owner neglect or lack of space in shelters so they were euthanized. I believe this campaign is wrong and will not donate my time or money or effort toward it.

Why? I’ve had one stray and three shelter animals in my life for 20 years, not all together. Some I’ve adopted have died regardless of kind care, great food and respect and just because they were old and I’d had them for over 10-15 years after abuse and shelter care and they’d had no real health care but spay/neuter at a shelter.

This should be for the shelter pets who lived as well. Yes, I’ll light four candles for the rescues I’ve had over the past 20 years and one for another rescue anywhere with a loving owner. That is my pledge.

We had a pact in our neighborhood. I had dogs and cats. Another neighbor had birds and reptiles. I’d bring the lost or tossed dog or cat to the nearest shelter and they knew me by now. They placed me in the euthanasia room, where I could see the chart for the day’s executions, the pet must have sensed the odor, and they used the universal scanner to find the chip that could find the owner.

Usually they did find the owner. We only had to adopt one cat, which whom I shared custody with a neighbor and it was only a couple of weeks until we found him a good home. We named him George, why, after years, I do not recall.

Often to raise money shelters give sad stories of abandoned and abused pets. I worked as a volunteer for one shelter for several years in many areas including dogs, cats, development, public relations, special events/volunteer management.

Do you know that people who are supposed to represent us in Washington are trying to shut down the government (which means your great-aunt won’t get her Social Security next month) in order to keep seniors, the poor and middle class from buying health insurance?

We have to make a change and Maddies’ Fund and SFSPCA and others did that for shelter animals but it has to go further as the money train must end, the training wheels need to come off.

Unfortunately people care is far behind dog and cat care. But it must change as well and will be a difficult road to know that caring for all from a young age through retirement and beyond is something rich people don’t want us to have.

When I bring my dog to the vet I get to be there. When my cat died, I held him in my arms. When my dog died the neighborhood gave a tree to the city in her memory. Today, people know my dog’s name but when I take her to get her nails trimmed I go to a groomer to cut nail costs by 2/3 by being the “tech” and calming her for the two minutes it takes.

Yes, we pay cash for our dog’s vet expenses, both hip removals, and nail-cutting. I bathe and groom her myself. Our nation had designed a system in which in preparation for ACA employers have cut back on their healthcare options and are forcing employees into HSA’s or making workers part-time so no health insurance whatsoever for a single mom and her kid. No-one with a pre-existing condition can get health insurance. No-one who is middle class can afford COBRA if they’re laid off. No poor person can afford much at all.

Dear anti-ACA, cash is not the solution. We pay cash for insurance because there is a risk pool and a lot of money to be made. Insurance doesn’t insure people, it makes investments on our premiums, denies claims then begs the government for a bailout and gets one. In the USA, we treat animals better than people. Dee
