Snow and Guests

Next week’s guest, an old friend, asks if 50 lbs is the limit for one bag without extra charges. She asked, jokingly, if one ball gown was sufficient, whereupon my dear husband replied “at least three.” We live in a very casual atmosphere, think Robert Redford in jeans, jacket and cowboy hat that look like he was born with them.

It’s also a very competitive and wealthy atmosphere and we live around it, not in it. We’ve become locals of a transitory sort, as of next month we’ll have been here two years.

The snow has been incredible over the past week and will continue, so we hope our guest will be able to enjoy a day or two on the slopes. Today I was the first person w/dog to try the path behind our home and it was a slog to get to the endpoint then back via the plowed road.

In the past few days we’ve seen fox twice, once with a snowshoe hare that eluded the fox. Others have seen the ermine but I’ve not in the past few weeks. When we do see wildlife it’s a gift, a flash of wilderness we don’t normally see and something that neither binoculars nor cameras can capture.

Jim has President’s Day off but he’s always thinking about a project he has to get out on Wednesday so I’m trying to keep him occupied so he can be focused and fresh Tuesday morning. He’ll be putting in a lot of hours in the next few days so tomorrow I’ll let him pick the movie, as long as it’s not horror.

We love snow, to a certain extent, and love having guests enjoy our time here in ski paradise. Happy Presidents’ Day! Cheers, Dee

  1. Hey Dee!
You should try snowshoeing! With a trail in your backyard, it’s perfect. We see a lot of people snowshoeing with their dogs…Zoe would love it! We just took it up (but we won’t give up skiing!) as we have so many friends who don’t ski, but were willing to try snowshoeing. Last weekend we did a Moonlight Snowshoe Tour at Griffis Sculpture Park in Ashford Hollow, NY. It was a riot and we met a lot of like-minded people (who don’t want to hibernate in the winter). Easy to get started and easy to do, but it is a great workout!
    Cheers, Pam
