XC Skiing

Any advice? Except to stay on flat trails to start. Jim and a buddy tried it for a couple of hours yesterday and we rented me skis, boots and poles and we’ll give it a shot in the morning. Most people at the shop were getting permits to ski the golf adjacent to the hotel, but we have a groomed trail a foot from our back deck that’s free so we’re going to try that. I feel a lot more confident doing this than downhill skiing.

Thirty years ago my parents bought us all SC skis for Christmas. We lived in a lovely community with very narrow streets that was perfect for the sport, and I used to ski to the post office to get the mail (the highlight of any Chautauquan’s winter day). Both skis and boots have come a long way in the intervening decades! Boots are higher with more insulation, and the skis are skinny little things! Care to take bets on how many times I wipe out? Happy New Year! Dee

  1. Have fun! I still have my 25 yo skis with the three pin toe-traps. I only use them in the neighborhood, when it snows here. They got some good use last winter!

  2. I only made it for about 1/2 hour but didn’t fall once! They’d just groomed the trail and we were the first on it, leaving tracks of our beginner-ness.

Yes PDX I had a pair around then with the pins. They were fat skis back then, too. Now they’re thin and the bindings release in certain falls (as they did for Jim once the other day).

I’m out of shape and need to work more on endurance and core strength if we’re to make this a life choice. But right now I must finish rolling out pizza dough and assemblage…

Hope y’all had a fantastic New Years’ weekend! Dee

  3. They’re skinnier than the skinny skis we had in the 80’s? Yikes!

The easiest XC skiing is in other people’s tracks…

  4. I’ll continue to get my kicks horseback, thanks very much! [Somehow I don’t trust strapping long thin pieces of wood to my feet?]
& jogging thru the deep wet sand in the arena this weekend was plenty aerobic for moi!

  5. Sorry to break the news to ya, Val, but they’re not made of wood anymore! And our Jim is allergic to horses. Darn, I hurt from just 1/2 hour yesterday! Dee
