What A Game!

It was a nail-biter for a while. While “my” adopted team won in the end, I rooted for them because I know what it’s like to live in the northeast and have all the manufacturing jobs disappear. It’s cold in the winter and all you can do on a Sunday after church is to go see your team play, if you’re lucky you’re in the stadium and if not, at home.

I think it’ll be a long time before anyone else runs in a 100-yard interception for a TD. Wow! Especially a big defensive dude. He sullied his reputation in the fourth Q with an unnecessary and after-play incident. But Santonio Holmes is having a good time tonight. I loved seeing both his toes touch on that last minute TD.

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against the Cardinals, it’s just that if you live in the northeast you protect your own. We can never live there because there’s no work for Jim, and NYC doesn’t pay more but a 75% cost of living increase will not allow us to move there at this time. Plus, there are a lot of talented people in his field looking for work there because of layoffs.

Same time, I like an exciting Superbowl rather than a rout. If it’s forty-something to zip, there’s something wrong in the system that doesn’t allow the best teams to compete.

My brother remembers our only trip to Vegas, nearly 20 years ago. The Sports Book was gaining prominence. I wasn’t good at cards so I put a $5 bet down on a horse on a muddy track, the wrong horse and wrong track and I won $40 and bought us dinner. Then I looked at the standings and wanted to put another grand investment of $5 into the Superbowl pool, before the season began. I didn’t. The Bills lost the Superbowl that year and “Norwood” was the call of Buffalo, the guy who missed the field goal that could have won the game.

I was in D.C. for SuperBowl VII when the Dolphins kicked our butts. I began to think that my enthusiasm for underdogs et al was hurting their chances. I stopped wearing my Bills shirt after the second consecutive loss. I can say that the wings and beef on ‘weck are fantastic in Buffalo.

It was great to see a game again and revel in the excitement of it. Jim was reading a technical book but joined me at halftime for commercials and Springsteen and I talked him through some of the game. OK, I was yelling about James Harrison and made him come in to see the replay of that 100 yard dash. Remarkable. Hope you enjoyed it (sorry, Cards and fans). I think I need to make real wings in the next few days. Cheers, Dee

  1. We in “Sixburgh” are proud to have so many “adopted” fans. Thanks for being part of the Nation! (P.S. I went to grade school through high school with a guy who was a Bills player during all their Super Bowl years — I so wanted them to win. Talk about tough times!)
