15 Minutes of Fame

Most of us won’t ever get it.  There are others, like White House party crashers or “real” housewives, who will.

Then there’s Steve Jobs, who got about 30 hours of fame post-mortem.  Plus there are books and who knows what else.  But the news cycle is short.  Exceedingly short because there are so many channels and so much competition.

I’m not neglecting print media, because everyone knows the Grey Lady will do a proper tribute.

In the 60’s people read the morning/afternoon paper, and watched Ozzie and Harriet, or Dick van Dyke or the evening news, perhaps a game show, on tv.

Now you have people selling their souls to get their lives on a reality show and get paid for it.  Look at the Kardashians, they’re laughing all the way to the bank!

I grew up in the 1960’s, no I had no idea of the summer of love or Dylan or Baez or Hendrix because I was just a kid.  But there is no way I’d subject our lives to a reality show, no matter what it paid.  There would be no interest because my husband and I don’t yell and scream or throw things at each other.

People seem to be screaming for attention, even if it’s the wrong kind of attention, like being filmed being a fool for everyone to laugh at.  And tv makes it easy to do these shows because they’re inexpensive to produce.  Look at even the home improvement shows that only allow $2,000 for a full home makeover.  How cheap is that?  Homeowners do a lot of the labor and there’s no fee for their involvement.

When I grew up we had three channels, ABC, NBC, CBS and PBS and the UHF channels which comprised one PBS channel in Toronto, Canada.  Sometimes I think it would be nice to get that again, and a morning paper.  Dee

Do you feel obligated to finish all books you start reading?

Yes, and no.  I love reading cook books as books.  I’m 3/4 of the way through Julia Child’s “My Life in France.”  I love Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci in Julie and Julia but can’t read the book because I find Julie to be an awful and shallow person.  When I see the movie I fast forward through the Julie parts just to see Meryl and Stanley do what they do best, and I love Amy Adams but not as Julie.

I’ve always been a bookworm.  By age eight I had several favorites.  Death Be Not Proud, John Gunther.  The Diary of Anne Frank, and three biographies on my favorite people: John F. Kennedy; Abraham Lincoln; and Annie Oakley.  Also the Betty Crocker Boys and Girls Cookbook and a dance book that included stories of the most famous ballerinas of the past 100 years.

When we moved out west 2.5 years ago I put all my cookbooks in storage. I’ve bought a few and been given a few as gifts but my library card serves me well, as does the internet.

Will books go by the wayside?  I hope not.  I love browsing a bookstore, such as Powell’s in Portland OR.  I was there six minutes and bought six used cookbooks and had them mail the books home.  Luckily their technical bookstore was several blocks away and it was pouring rain or we would have a bigger dent in our bank account.

Don’t have an iPad yet.  I like my setup with laptop closed, cordless keyboard and huge flat-screen monitor.  I wouldn’t like to read books on it, as seating is not optimal.

Permit me to say that I’m an Apple convert for five years now and have an iMac hwith extra memory, and an iPhone, old one that keeps on ticking.  That’s how husband Jim times steaks!  Today Steve Jobs resigned as CEO of Apple and I wish him well.   He revolutionized the computer industry and his presence as the day-to-day CEO will be missed.

Note to brother Kevin: NO, I have never finished Pillars of the Earth but watched it as a mini-series and it’s on my list.  So is “Get Passport.” D

Arrogance

It now equals Steve Jobs peeing on our leg and saying it’s raining. Yes, thank you Farhad Manjoo of Slate for that image. I looked up the original source and know it was in a movie but seems to be credited to TV Judge Judith Sheindlin. Of course that’s Microsoft (Slate is owned by it) bashing Apple, under the covers.

I am now a convinced Apple user from MacBook to iPhone (old MacBook, refurb iPhone) but the company’s actions are not good, especially as they knew the problems, released the phone then denied the problems and think the users are at fault. To Mr. Jobs, you have to acknowledge a problem once in a while and make things right.

When one makes a mistake, it must be acknowledged, apologized for and corrected. Apple has not done this and the further this goes the worse it will get.

Think BP and a certain oil spill. Senator Larry Craig propositioning a law enforcement official in an airport bathroom stall. Even Mr. Clinton saying he did not have sex with “that woman.”

Every time they lied it got worse. Even though every computerized device in our household is now made by your company, Mr. Jobs, that doesn’t let you off the hook to acknowledge and correct mistakes and not just say that everyone makes them. Yes, everyone does, but successful and honest CEO’s take control of their projects and stand by them, and fix them if needed. btw my husband advised that we not buy the new phone until the bugs are worked out. That was after a model was left in a bar in No Cal and before the phone was even introduced. He’s just a software guy not involved in the cellphone market and they all read SlashDot. Cheers, Dee
