Hunkering Down

This month, Jim and I will have been married for six years. Unemployed at the time, he obtained a provisional patent for a smart phone application he invented. Over the years four were stable, work-wise, and I could food shop as I liked. I hate clothes shopping but love a great grocery or farmer’s market!

During the month of July, when an offer was rescinded and he’d already put in notice, we ate out of the freezer and pantry (no, John, we still have Bambi) for a few weeks, with fruits and veg and dairy purchased. Our stores were down and then he got the new gig and I did a limited build-up. Then came Ike, and a major build-up. When the supermarket is dark, four days after a major hurricane, and the shelves are depleted a hoarding mentality sets in. I bought a big jar of applesauce, and very strange things that are still here.

Our pantry is chock-full of pasta, tomatoes, hearts of palm, artichokes, rice and couscous, salsa, jams, spices. Now that lean times have arrived, we’ve started with the freezer and pantry. I thawed tonight’s Cornish game hen and bought the potatoes to make latkes for Hannukah for a friend. Unfortunately even with an excellent wheat baguette and expensive extra-sharp cheddar Jim did not want a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch (we’re not going to restaurants for a while). Tomorrow I’ll make BLT’s and he can have a mug of butternut squash/carrot soup with it.

My dad will be in LA this weekend and we bought tickets and it would be a shame to waste them. It all depends upon whether Jim has an out-of-town interview on Friday. While it’s a brief weekend it would be nice to see the coast again, and family of course. Cheers! Dee

Hurricane Edouard

It just hit about a half an hour ago and may turn into a hurricane (just did) and/or tornadoes. So far just rain and lighning and thunder. I didn’t get any good photos because the shutter speed was so slow that the lighning is gone before it clicks. But before it started raining, the first bolt of lighning was spectacular, rivaling the fireworks here a few weeks ago. That’s what sent me running for the camera. But as Jim and Zoe were running in from the “dog lawn” to escape the downpour, all I got was a rain-soaked window!

There is a downside to eating one’s way through one’s pantry. For the past few weeks we’ve been sure that we’d be moving out of state. Let’s use up some spaghetti tonight, and I’ll use those two 28-oz cans of tomatoes to make a sauce. Checkmark. Now what shall I do with those hearts of palm? All so we wouldn’t have to move heavy canned goods! So we’re not in as good shape for a hurricane as we were a few weeks ago. I’ll replenish…

We’re staying right where we are, at least for 6 months to a year. Yea! Jim took a consulting gig in town and should start tomorrow or Tuesday. More when it’s “real.” I’m planning a “Staying” party in a couple of weeks when things settle down and we’ll host an open house to celebrate our newly-found good fortune.

So wish us well and I’ll share some more information after Jim’s had a few days on the job. And after I’ve had a few days to pick up the pace around here and do things that have slipped on the priority list with Jim AND Zoe underfoot. Yes, I love them both but Zoe leaves her fur everywhere and Jim deserves my nickname for him, The Human Tornado.” I asked him to put the rug vacuum away the other day and he wound up the cord and left it sitting in the middle of the living room. Just found dirty socks on our new sofa. You get the picture.

Tomorrow’s Monday. Let’s hope Jim doesn’t need to hire a boat to go to his new place of employment. Dee
