Favorite Local Haunts

There’s this guy named Steve… that owns a local restaurant. I can’t say I was pushed into writing this, OK I was, but it’s easier than writing about my favorite homemade dinners of all time.

We generally go out locally for dinner once a week, and two lunches each weekend. It gives Jim and I time to be together without my cooking up a storm. As to dinner, either I’m lazy or was too busy one day to cook, or he didn’t call from work (1/2 hour commute) until well after 7:30 and there was no way I was going to start dinner at that time of night when work beckons in the morning.

Tonight was one of those late nights. We went to Loco Lizard, one of our favorite local restaurants. Everyone treats us well there, even Steve, the owner. Recently I remarked that his tacos al pastor were a bit inconsistent. I’ve been working my way through his menu for the past year or so, but tonight tried the tacos al pastor once again and they were excellente. Perfectly marinated and charred pork and pineapple in small, thin corn tortillas. I know that when I break out my new achiote paste and try the recipe at home, it won’t hold a candle to what Chef Roberto made tonight.

In the spirit of very tasty yet simple things, Flippin’ Burgers is a treat. Perfectly cooked burger with Idaho fries. Last time they had a special Island Burger with pineapple and it was incredible. We love going there for Saturday or Sunday lunch.

One of our formerly favorite places is Purple Sage, but they’ve been closed every time we’ve walked by over the past year so too bad, it’s out of the running.

Maxwell’s has the best pizza in town. Jim loves their “Untouchables” that just the aroma of it makes my eyes water. I stick with plain pepperoni or spinach/feta. This is one of our first restaurants here and while we’ve had our ups and downs, we are stalwart fans of their people and their food. They were sued for cooking breakfast (chef made me poached eggs off the menu for months of Sundays and they make a killer Bloody Mary).

Reyes Adobe has the best carne asada I’ve ever tasted. This young couple has made more than a ripple in the local pond, and we are glad we found it last year. I brought my mother-in-law and nephew a couple of weeks ago, during the week, and they were great about having a kids meal for this seven year-old, plus we shared the carne asada and a side of chips and guacamole.

In Kamas, about 1/2 hour drive away, there’s a diner called “Hi-Mountain Drug” and yes, it’s a pharmacy, camping and book and “stuff” store as well as a counter and a few tables. They make a great burger, rated the best in the state. It’s a bit of a trek and they’re closed Sundays but this is one place we take out-of-state guests.

The one thing all these places have in common is that they treat people, and us, especially well. We thank them for being here and doing what they do that makes our lives easier and our increasingly longer stay more pleasant. Bravo to our local restaurants and restaurateurs! Cheers, Dee

Getting Ready for Guests

The guest room is ready and the house is nearly clean. I only have to deal with my accumulated paperwork. I always collect paper and pile until I file. The home is not ours so I can’t really change anything nor do I have room for receipts, bills, tax information, electronics, PSIII accoutrements and the few books we’ve acquired during our stay.

Mostly cookbooks and cooking magazines when I was trying to stop myself from buying cookbooks. I do have two now on my Amazon wish list from a recent NYTimes article. Fiesta With Rick by Rick and Deanne Bayless; and In The Green Kitchen… by Alice Waters.

I can’t place either of them on my cookbook list until I’ve read the books and tried some recipes. Tonight I’m trying yakitori chicken skewers from Food and Wine, and I’ve substituted red pepper for the shitaki mushrooms because my husband doesn’t like them.

I’m also making a new recipe for cold sesame noodles. I love Deborah Madison’s in the Greens cookbook (which I cite in my cookbook recommendations) but that book is in storage 1,500 miles away so I’m going to punt with another try and will let you know how it goes.

I’m testing these for later in the week and may have to try tacos al pastor as well, though our guests arrive Wednesday noon and I need to shop and not play in the kitchen with new recipes. My simple, home-cooked meals should be enough to save the days.

Women worry so much more than men do about having out-of-town guests stay and be comfortable. If my long-term husband was living in a man-cave he might know what kind of beer the guest liked and get him a six-pack, a blanket and grungy pillow and have him sleep on the sofa.

I want to make certain much of breakfast and dinner are taken care of before guests arrive and I’m working on that now, having menus and now re-think them to make them even more tasty and easier to make. Mars and Venus, I know.

Why do women marry people who don’t ever put a new roll of toilet paper on the holder??? Things have changed. We went out for dinner and I just returned, as Jim has to make a quick run to Home Depot for a wrench to change the dog wash station in the 2nd upstairs bathroom to a shower hook-up.

I had a lovely risotto, a special this evening, and thanked our chef and waitress, who turned out to be the big sister of the chef! Maxwell’s is a wonderful pizza place and everything they do is upscale and consistent, like my special risotto and Jim’s Philly Cheese Steak.

It’s been raining but hopefully will stop by Wednesday. Usually they’re good about the forecasts as they know the winds and speed and the storms are already on land by the time they get here.

Take care and have a good week! Tomorrow is grocery shopping and finishing the remainder of my exhaustive list. It’ll happen. Thanks to Reyna for helping out today! Cheers, Dee

Local Heroes

Our favorite Sunday brunch place has been forbidden by a local court to serve this tasty meal. It’s a long story but involves commercial leases and zoning et al. These intrepid restaurant mavens started five years ago with a pizza that is still remarkable. The dough is crisp and tasty and the toppings are both classic and new. Maxwell’s has many other great dishes and is a great place to hang out and perhaps see a local concert or festival.

Loco Lizard is also one of our favorite restaurants, where I first tasted tacos al pastor. My husband usually gets fajitas but I’ve been working my way around the menu to try new things and am rewarded for this effort by new tastes and textures. Their staff is very good.

At Reyes Adobe we had a wonderful meal outdoors last Fall, and as of this weekend they’re open for lunch on weekends. Most places close down for at least 4-6 weeks after the winter. The meal we had yesterday was fantastic. The carne asada had marinated overnight (the recipe is secret, we tried to no avail). It was served with grilled scallions, Mexican and white rice and accoutrements. Churros, for dessert, gave a cinnamon punch to a lovely spring lunch in town.

Today we wanted to see a movie, Robin Hood. So we went to Red Rock for lunch. I usually get the home-smoked salmon but tried the beer cracker with gorgonzola, sage and roasted garlic instead. It was good and so was the movie. I’d see Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett in anything.

All in all, it was a good weekend and hope yours was as well. Cheers, Dee
