Egypt

I’m no diplomat, just know that making peace in that area of the world is a necessity. I remember being so pleased at the peace treaty between Anwar Sadat and Menachim Begin. Now I know that billions are given annually to hold Egypt to that treaty, who knows how much to Israel. It was an elusive dream of detente and potential friendship.

Now Sadat’s former vice-president is in peril and according to a political novice, me, seems to have made some mistakes and the locals are pretty peeved. Hitler chose suicide. Other alternatives are military coup, coup and execution by the masses or overthrow by his VP (not likely as they’re too closely linked).

I do not condone leadership by fiat or force, or by what some deem “divine right.” For mob rule to storm the presidential offices and kill Mubarek would throw the country into further turmoil. We have presidential elections where one wins, one concedes and we go on living our lives. Many countries do not have that option.

A swift and electoral, planned transition should be made. That’s only my opinion. I wish Egypt’s residents peace and closure on this matter. Dee
