First Aid

My husband and I both have enhanced first aid kits in our cars (we add bandages and salves) but have been lax in our home care.

Yesterday a friend came by, in tears, with a burn on her hand. I had her stand with ice over the kitchen sink while I perused our arsenal, which was pitiful.

After she got the heat out of the wound, I took her to my car and was able to give her antibacterial ointment and a large waterproof bandage.

Lesson learned: always have everything available at a moment’s notice. Not just in your car, but in your home.

Many years ago I sliced my finger with a serrated knife, cutting a hard roll for dinner. A graduate of two cooking schools I can’t believe I did something that dumb. After 20 minutes gushing blood and holding my hand up over my head I acquiesced and called a friend.

Luckily he had been an Army Ranger. A minute later I was at their home and the kitchen table was already decked out like an ER. He placed green tea bags on my finger to stop the bleeding, then bandaged me. His wife spoke to me from the office, turned the other way because she couldn’t stand the sight of blood, but offered verbal support that was much appreciated.

There are many dangers in the kitchen. Please make sure you have a First Aid kit and a fire extinguisher. My husband is ICE (In Case of Emergency) on my phone.

Keep your mind and your knives sharp. Cheers! Dee

p.s. I think I’ll add Bach’s Rescue Remedy to all First Aid kits.
