Crosswalk

I got this done after six months, and it took a woman’s life to make it happen. I hope her family knows that we care and want safe streets.

The paint is now fading and I don’t know if it will ever be repainted.

One day I told someone that we almost got hit on the new crosswalk and that it was a dark day, indeed. The next day some one stopped and I waved hello and thank you. The next day I saw him and said someone actually stopped for us! He said “I know, it was me.”

Today a police car stopped for us in “my” crosswalk. Thanks ma’am, for making our neighborhood a safer place to live. Supercalifragilisticexpedaladociously, Dee

The Federal Highway Admistration

says “Some agencies around the United States consider that removing crosswalk markings improves pedestrian safety.” You try crossing the street from your home with people going 50 in a 30 and coming around the corner from no-where.

I spent six months trying to get a crosswalk and got it. Motorists speed up, don’t slow down or stop. I considered renting a stroller and a baby doll for a test.

Don’t laugh. I’ve got two great reporters here that are glad to hear my story. I’ll choose which one will do so. Hear that City and County? It’s not just this old lady and her old dog crossing the street, its mommies and babies and strollers, old couples, runners, walkers et al and no-one blinks at this crosswalk. Now it’s invisible because of the amount of salt on roads the city doesn’t want to plow so just sprays salt.

The sidewalks are solid ice and no one has lifted a finger on that one. I guess they’re awaiting a lawsuit from a resident taxpayer who slips, falls and breaks a hip. When it comes down to it, isn’t it in the city/county’s best interest to prevent these incidents on our public property we pay for, rather then spend even more of our money on lawsuits? Not so cheery but hoping for a good New Year, Dee
