Seems Like Old Times

After months away, my husband is planning to be home on the weekends. There is much to do and it seems like old times. The dog doesn’t get it, yet, but will.

If you recall the Goldie Hawn/Chevy Chase/Charles Grodin movie Seems Like Old Times you’ll know that the supporting characters include the Judge, Aurora and the dogs. Plus the criminals.

Years ago I wrote a blog about the fictitious Aurora’s Chicken Pepperoni and I get hits on it every week. I’ve never made it or found a recipe for it but because this is a “cooking” blog people read my piece.

Oh, when Glenda walked up to that remote cabin in the woods and Nick answered the door…..  This can’t possibly be a spoiler alert because the movie was made in 1980. Sorry, Ira.

Now, Aurora, where’s that recipe? Or are you off to the hospital to get your feet scraped? Where are the dogs and where’s my car? I think it was stolen! Dee

Seems Like Old Times

Hello Neil Simon, my dad graduated from your high school but you probably didn’t know him as he was four years junior. Thank you for your body of work that amazes me whenever I read one of your scripts or see a movie or play.

To Goldie Hawn, Chevy Chase and Charles Grodin, you made this picture. I started a cooking blog years ago and still I get requests for Aurora’s Chicken Pepperoni!

Because you were so funny in Seems Like Old Times I thought you would like to know that people still want the recipe for Aurora’s Chicken Pepperoni and I don’t have it to give them, and doubt Aurora does but she played a great role.

Thank you for entertaining us and doing good work. Cheers, Dee

Aurora’s Chicken Pepperoni

I got a hit today from someone who wanted to know what movie that came from. It’s from one of my favorites, Seems Like Old Times with Goldie Hawn, Chevy Chase,Charles Grodin, Aurora and a whole lot of dogs.

The recipe eludes me, as I’ve never thought of pairing chicken with a pepperoni sauce which is what made the movie funny. Thank you for pinging my blog on that, it’s always been a question in my mind.

When people cook in the movies, do you look and see that they’ve never used a knife in their life or even made a peanut butter sandwich? It’s like when they show an actor playing a violin, come on, it starts to ruin the film for me because I only see that they can’t cook or make music but pretend to do so.

That must be where Meryl Streep comes in. Once known for her accents, she’s now known for her acting. While I love all of her work I believe my favorite tragic performance is Sophie in Sophie’s Choice.

Let’s talk about cooking shows next. No, I’d rather talk about the Olympics. Go USA! My Olympic pin (from a dear friend in Scotland) is on my white denim jacket every day and I wear it with pride. I did have one I bought in Greece for their Olympic Games but haven’t come upon it yet in boxes.

If I were a few decades younger, Ryan Lochte’s eye may have caught mine. I’m happy with my prince and pup. Cheers! Have some tea with a scone and jam. Dee

Movies and Food

Charles Grodin must be a foodie. Don’t tell me if you’re not! Recently we saw “Seems Like Old Times” and I always remember Aurora’s Chicken Pepperoni. So I made something that resembled it last night. I won’t tell you what’s really in it, only that I sauteed some chicken and put it in the oven with sauce with pepperoni and topped it with some mozzarella cheese. Then when it was nearly done I boiled some fresh pasta, tossed it with more of the sauce and served it together. I cheated on this recipe with a bottled sauce, to which I added diced pepperoni. I can’t tell you what I used because messing with this sauce may have dire consequences.

One of my favorite movies is “Midnight Run,” in which Charles Grodin waxes poetic about Potatoes Lyonnaise. I’ve made sauteed potatoes with onions for many years but have no idea whether it is the traditional French version.

Perhaps during awards season my next attempt will come from “Big Night.” If the timbale is to be made, guests must be present and the proper vessel purchased. Here’s to next time, Dee
