Easter

We did a bit of a different Easter. There were eggs, but not decorated. There was ham.

It was brunch, and I served two perfect Black Forest ham and 2 year-old Wisconsin cheese omelets. With toast.

Please don’t ask what Wisconsin cheese is. You have supermarket cheese and then you go to live in Scotland and all it says is “mature cheddar.” Buy it and it’s great.

In Wisconsin it’s advertised by age. I like 4-year, my husband is up to 2-year. In omelets I can run the gamut.

Julia Child would be proud of me as a student for flipping the pan the right way and folding out beautiful Easter omelets.

Dinner was an homage to my German roots. Weisswurst and rosti potatoes. Yes, I continue to push the envelope on holidays but that’s what makes them fun. Dee

Sound of Music Brunch

I got a hit today on this topic, why I do not know. The Sound of Music is the first movie I remember seeing. It was 1965 and I believe I made my parents take me twice (that wasn’t done in our family). I don’t have the new HD version but do have one with interviews and other perks. It is delightful for Julie Andrews, of course, as well as the humanizing of the Captain and the growing pains of the children.

I could probably play most of these songs, without music, on the guitar though I’m a beginner and in my 50’s my voice isn’t what it used to be. No way it was like Julie Andrews, ever! Thanks so much, whoever you are, for bringing up this topic.

In Germany and Austria, for breakfast there are these rolls, bruechen (sp) and air-dried beef. Those were my favorites but I like a lighter breakfast. In visiting many years ago we had fondue in Switzerland, fresh trout in the Black Forest of Germany, and schnitzel in Austria. We also had many pastries, including Sacher torte (we stayed at the Sacher). We hope to go back to revisit my father’s homeland for his 80th birthday this fall and hope to have more to add upon our return. Danke, Dee
