Really Big Show

No clue. This photo interface is giving me major problems and has for over two hours so I’m giving up on that one for now. That will have to wait until tomorrow.

There will be a major music festival for three days that will shut down our street. In the meantime I heard from my college advisor whose twin brother died yesterday. I wrote him two notes (one email, one US mail) and sent a small contribution to his department.

It’s interesting when you realize that athletes et al are younger than you. The world of possibilities gets smaller and smaller until you hopefully find your niche. Or hopefully you found it out beforehand.

On The Tonight Show this evening was Shawn Johnson, who had Arsenio and Jay Leno on a low balance beam. Unfortunately I only caught the last minute. I really like her spirit. And they were good sports.

Gymnasts, swimmers, skateboarders, I love seeing what I can no longer do. That’s why the Olympics are so important.

Jim bought a dulcinea watermelon that I might even pair with yogurt for smoothies. Still he’ll need full breakfast but I won’t.

Posting

Sometimes I have to rein myself in from responding to popular posts. I’ve been physically given my parameters, a narrow swath, in a world of open arms. It always interests me to see what blogs people want to read, and many are rude, closed-minded, scatalogical, racist or otherwise offensive to me.

I’ve an open mind and luckily believe in the First Amendment (let’s debate the 2nd another time when I’m not at a Texas school carrying my “piece” to class because the school board approved it in secret last spring).

All I want to do is share and teach and I can’t believe that in these three months, as of today, over 4,600 have checked in to see what I have to say. Thank you. I don’t ever want to hold a gun (was forced to in gym class, a bb gun in 8th grade and I was a terrible shot – got a D in gym) again and I don’t teach in public schools. I just find it incredible that a Texas school district is allowing its teachers to bring a gun to class.

When I was in high school we had “open campus” and instead of going to McDonalds with my buddies I walked home and swam and sat in the sun. I actually went back to school for gymnastics later on, and every day in the summer. And looked forward to it. No wonder I’m married to my geek husband who I love very much, D.

“No one who cooks, cooks alone. Even at her most solitary, a cook in the kitchen is surrounded by generations of cooks past, the advice and menus of cooks present, the wisdom of cookbook writers.” Laurie Colwin

I believe that today as I strive not to make magic in the kitchen, but cook and create and teach. Please place your heart and soul in your cooking, as I do. Your loved ones will save a special place in their hearts for you.

Astros Photos

From our seats. First is early on in the game, from the cell phone. Second, look up on the upper right #7, Craig Biggio’s number, was retired today. Blurry scoreboard but fun game.

Hope y’all had a great weekend! Note: this is directed you you, personally, as all y’all it TexSpeak for all of you readers. Things one learns… Dee

Tropic Thunder

Packed theater. Funny send-up of Hollywood spoofing Hollywood. Fully deserves its R rating. My review: fun summer movie.

As to criticism of “racism” and of negative connotations of films portraying the mentally challenged, I say no way. Racism is for white Aussie Kirk Lazarus having a skin pigmentation operation so he can play a 1969 Black sergeant and inhabit the role. Disabled people should not boycott the film because rapidly fading action star Tugg Speedman decided to play a “Rain Man” type role to attain Oscar glory. It is a spoof of actors and producers and directors and what they’ll stoop to for glory and the almighty dollar.

We’ve got just a few moments to change and get to a party so have a wonderful Saturday night! Dee

Sleep, sleep

Why are you up reading my blog

at three-o’clock in the morning

Why am I here writing to you

at three-o’clock as well

I’m too nervous, worried to sleep

right now as Jim and Zoe snore

Awaiting a hurricane to hit

And save Katrina rescue dog next door

Thank you much for visiting, hope that you will join

our little contest going on, if you’re up you’ll find

it’s fun to try to something new, at least something to do

in the wee, small hours of the morning..,,

Wait, that’s an old Frank Sinatra song. I’m going to bed now.

Hurricane Edouard

It just hit about a half an hour ago and may turn into a hurricane (just did) and/or tornadoes. So far just rain and lighning and thunder. I didn’t get any good photos because the shutter speed was so slow that the lighning is gone before it clicks. But before it started raining, the first bolt of lighning was spectacular, rivaling the fireworks here a few weeks ago. That’s what sent me running for the camera. But as Jim and Zoe were running in from the “dog lawn” to escape the downpour, all I got was a rain-soaked window!

There is a downside to eating one’s way through one’s pantry. For the past few weeks we’ve been sure that we’d be moving out of state. Let’s use up some spaghetti tonight, and I’ll use those two 28-oz cans of tomatoes to make a sauce. Checkmark. Now what shall I do with those hearts of palm? All so we wouldn’t have to move heavy canned goods! So we’re not in as good shape for a hurricane as we were a few weeks ago. I’ll replenish…

We’re staying right where we are, at least for 6 months to a year. Yea! Jim took a consulting gig in town and should start tomorrow or Tuesday. More when it’s “real.” I’m planning a “Staying” party in a couple of weeks when things settle down and we’ll host an open house to celebrate our newly-found good fortune.

So wish us well and I’ll share some more information after Jim’s had a few days on the job. And after I’ve had a few days to pick up the pace around here and do things that have slipped on the priority list with Jim AND Zoe underfoot. Yes, I love them both but Zoe leaves her fur everywhere and Jim deserves my nickname for him, The Human Tornado.” I asked him to put the rug vacuum away the other day and he wound up the cord and left it sitting in the middle of the living room. Just found dirty socks on our new sofa. You get the picture.

Tomorrow’s Monday. Let’s hope Jim doesn’t need to hire a boat to go to his new place of employment. Dee

Bank Losses

OK, I admit I’m straying from blog concept but then I’m the blogger and often you like my going out of bounds.

Two major banks announced major losses today, WaMu and Wachovia. All because they were supremely greedy in the sub-prime glory days.

Do you think all the big banks got together and said “Let’s announce all our major losses in Q2?” First, because the media would lump them all together and forget who did what; and second, so that the Feds (meaning our wallets) would bail them out to the tune of $25 billion.

I’d rather the Feds, after bailing out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and putting them on a tight leash, have them take over these delinquent loans providing homeowners some security from these banks’ collective avarice. Then leave the banks to manage their own troubles, sink or swim.

Whatever gets us out of this debacle before full-scale recession. Helping the banks will in no way help these homeowners who’ve been taken advantage of by slick salespeople.

You might know that my background is way more than cooking. Righty-O.

Note: This message was approved by no one, not even the dog. It is not an endorsement for any banking product, subprime loan et al.

Care to Spin the Wheel?

Feels like Vegas. As job offers begin to roll in we need to decide what part of the country we’ll be living in, in less than two weeks. Roll the dice, spin the wheel, we’ll go where we’ll go.

I haven’t packed a thing yet or started throwing away any paper (cooking magazines, etc) I manage to collect on any horizontal surface to Jim’s chagrin.

We had a nice evening capped off by dinner at a local Mexican eatery where the spinach enchiladas were very tasty. Tomorrow we’re having a friend and perhaps Zoe’s sister dog (who locals named Zoe II for there was already our Zoe living here) over for dinner.

Hopefully a last quiet weekend, the calm before the storm. Actually we did quite well in Vegas, our brief honeymoon destination. We walked the Strip and put a quarter in every hotel’s slot machine. Spent $4 total and ended up with $6. Not bad! It was quite hot out so we spent the winnings on bottled water.

Rosslyn

The chapel was amazing. We had to take a train, two buses and walk by

The apprentice pillar

The apprentice pillar

a stinky cow pasture to get there but it was winter and there were only 30 people there at the time.

They used to get 3,000 people a year but now get at least 100,000 and it’s a very small place. All due to the Da Vinci Code book and movie, of course.

If you look behind the altar there are three pillars. Behind those pillars on the left is the master artist’s pillar with vertical columns and to the right is the apprentice pillar with a diagonal design.

Story is the master went touring Europe to see how to craft this great pillar and while he was away his apprentice carved his own. Once he returned he saw the greatness in his apprentice and killed him.

The Chapel is incredible, begun by a historic French family including Knights Templar. Masons carved nearly every inch of the structure with pagan, Christian, Jewish and Latin enscriptions.

If you do go and want to enjoy viewing it, please go in the winter when crowds are sparse. The restaurant in the hotel on the corner made a great soup and sandwich so that was a bonus. The cow pasture had just been manured and 1/2 hour of walking was an assault to the nostrils.

But if you don’t mind driving on the wrong side of a car on the wrong side of the street through multiple “roundabouts” that go the wrong way, go ahead and drive.

Check out the Rosslyn Motet online. Researchers looked for clues in the carvings and wrote a Motet based on them. Our friends from Scotland went to see a performance at Rosslyn Chapel.
