If so, what do new royals like Kate and Charlene (Monaco) actually do? I don’t know much about the new Princess of Monaco, except that she was an Olympic swimmer, which might explain the shoulder shrug that was built into her lovely wedding dress. Right now the press is only concerned with what these ladies wear. Unfortunately, even though Princess Kate is re-wearing dresses that most Britons and Americans cannot afford even in the best of times, she has had many wardrobe changes in her Canadian stint and thousands more as the couple age and grow into their roles.
Is it really frugal to wear a $1,000 off-the-rack dress twice? I know the Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge claim no servants whatsoever but Wils has to have secret service all over the place, and how can her hair look that good all the time?
These are the women that will support men (hey, we do it all the time) in high office. Why do we not care who they are? And only care who they wear? In Britain, my opinion is that The Firm has tried out Kate for ten years and decided she’s OK. She won’t make waves like Diana. She’ll be known for her dresses and little else, except for unveiling placques et al.
Some people think that monarchies are revived with new blood. If new blood only means designer clothing and handbags, that’s nothing to cling to, no matter what interesting media fodder it generates. Perhaps the monarchy can exist in Monaco, luckily that’s only one square mile of this earth and probably the site of most of the world’s most heinous white collar criminals, and their yachts. Dee
