Is the Moon Made of Cheese?

That’s what every kid grows up believing, for a while at least. Perhaps not since 1969 when we landed on it…

Last night, 4:00 this morning to be exact, the moon awakened me. This week, the full moon was 30% brighter, an event that occurs every 19 years. We were unable to see it as it’s been snowing the past week. I did see a hint of moon behind the clouds and that must be because it was so bright. Last night for the first time in a while we had clear skies and a waning moon (about 3/4) and we left the shades up so we could see the mountains.

Light cues me that it’s time to get up and take the dog out and get ready for the day. It was near daylight in our room and looking at the moon was painful so I put the blinds down a couple of feet to get back to sleep.

If the moon IS made of cheese, I would want it to be Parmigiano Reggiano, Bel Paese, Fontina, gorgonzola dolce, wonderful aged cheddar, Roquefort or Stilton, Camembert, Gruyere, Emmenthaler, raclette, taleggio, pecorino, and one slice of individually wrapped “American” cheese. Why the last item? Because everyone at school got individually wrapped cheese so I thought it was cool at the time. There are hundreds of cheeses I missed but I could never give up dairy.

Tonight we may have cloudy skies and it’s destined to snow tomorrow through the weekend so there’s the last of our moon, for now. A couple sandhill cranes checked us out and flew on to their nesting grounds the other day. Our pair should be back in a week or so. And as of today the robins are back, biggest robins I’ve ever seen! They join their friends the redwing blackbirds, ducks and a couple of geese so far in enjoying the snow melt.

Yesterday I rescued a 90 lb white Lab from inside the Preserve. I recruited a guy to help get him over the fence, used treats to get him into our home and called the owners. Twenty minutes later he was on his way home. I love happy endings. Cheers, Dee

p.s. Moments before I left to volunteer this morning I heard that Elizabeth Taylor died. Condolences to her family and friends. I will always think of her in National Velvet.
