Politics and Two-Year Terms

Congress wants to have the power to send this nation to war, but won’t because they want someone else to be responsible for the result. The President declares action on another country as a result of a UN Resolution, like the one on Libya late last week. His opposition holds a caucus (where the other party is not allowed to attend) and figures out how to attack the President on his decision because elections are coming up and we have to have the right positioning, like requiring every US citizen to sing the Star Spangled Banner before they get into the shower every morning and if the other party opposes, there it goes in the campaign literature. “Congresswoman X is not a patriot because she believes every American should not be legally required to sing the Star Spangled Banner before showering!”

Political posturing is a given. That it is so blatant when there are so many serious things for our Senators and Representatives to consider is not laughable, it’s sad. Why have we voters given such a shallow pool of people our votes?

First, there’s our budget. Our nation’s paper is only good for another three weeks yet the upcoming elections make it look like it’s Dump Obama Day because our nation joined many in the world to stop a tyrant from killing innocent people. Nuclear waste from Japan is wafting over the USA at 40-50 mph in my neck of the woods. Our nuclear plants may not be safe.

Instead of caring for their constituents, politicians are digging in and finding or, right now, creating anything they can use as a sound bite to smear their oppenents. It’s a crass practice and one which got me out of politics over twenty years ago. Two year terms mean that your US Representative gets elected, tries to pay off his campaign debts and starts again on day one in office cultivating new donors for his re-election. He doesn’t care about you even if you voted for him. His entire two years are photo ops and getting re-elected. Not that I’d want that dolt in office for four years! We have to increase the caliber of talent.

It used to be a part-time legislature of farmers, businessmen, lawyers, teachers and others. Now it’s full time and if it’s not going to be fixed we may as well think about taking a shot at it because it means health insurance and a pension for life! Cheers, Dee
