Early this morning I heard the first report of Japan’s massive earthquake and tsunami. I thought immediately of New Zealand and tectonic plates shifting. When I saw the world tsunami map it embraced the entire Pacific ocean.
Condolences to families who lost family members and homes. As the hours pass, we need to think about the fates of many thousands living near now two nuclear power plants that are leaking in Japan.
I’ve friends in Hawaii, and neighbors who’ve worked their tails off for months only to be there on vacation today. They’re OK.
These international natural disasters hurt and kill people. Often we only care about them when they affect us in a primary or secondary way. They make things like Charlie Sheen and even Quaddafi seem small. Taking care of our own means taking care of everyone. We are one world, one people, no matter color or religion or sexual identity.
