Liverwurst and Buttermilk

One of my favorite movies of all time is White Christmas with Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney and Danny Kaye. Right after Crosby and Clooney talked about dreams and liverwurst and buttermilk, they sang “Count Your Blessings” that was better than counting sheep.

I actually got to meet Rosemary Clooney backstage at a concert, and I wondered about her life given the snippets I’d heard in records and in movies. She did have a way with a tune, and anyone who can match Bing is aces in my book.

“White Christmas” was actually in my collection until VHS died. Now I probably have to buy the DVD or look it up on Netflix or something. I’m way older than she was in the motion picture so don’t know what technology is coming down the pike.

Liverwurst is something my grandfather made my mother try in order to get along with the family. Mom made my grandfather eat corn on the cob, which was pig food in Germany. Buttermilk has its uses in biscuits and elsewhere but nowhere was liverwurst and buttermilk made more homey and romantic than this Blessings song.

Many thanks Rosemary, Bing, Danny and Vera and cast and crew for making every year a Christmas to remember, XOXO Dee

  1. Yes, we had a Mono album with Ms. Clooney in a gown showing just a hint of cleavage, before I knew what cleavage was (and I still don’t have any decades later). Mom put masking tape across the cleavage and wrote my name on the tape so that the record would be acceptable for show and tell at school. Dee

  2. I saw it again this year and my husband even suffered some of it. “Choreography” is when we leave for a few moments. But it stil has its charms and I’ll see it an a few others as long as they’re still around. Dee
