Yes, that word means many things. For example, our electrical power went out for a second or two and this computer, modem, cable modem had to power up. The clocks were all off so I changed the ones I could.
Is that what power means? Or does it mean the will and perceived ability to control the masses. Could be one and the same if Enron and the smartest guys in the room were still in charge. They’re not.
Stocks took a dive and no-one seems to know why. Banks and insurance companies have been bailed out by us taxpayers but no-one is helping people with mortgages and encouraging new homeowners into the market. Consumers can only complain, lobbyists give checks for millions of dollars to make sure things in Congress go their way. How do you think they’ll vote? For the lobbyists, or for us. Now you get it.
It would cost a day’s vacation to go to one of these Washington D.C. restaurants, much less take your congressman and a staffer.
No, I’m not a tea partier. But BP is failing to curtail multiple oil spills off our coastline in what looks like a cartoon from the 1930’s. But it’s not funny.
The tea partiers have kicked Bob Bennett off the ticket in Utah and I don’t know whether that’s good or bad only that it’s reactionary and therefore good in the short-term and bad in the long-term for our nation.
We’ve evolved a quarter-by-quarter philosophy and have not looked at the long term. Look at Warren Buffett. So many people want to abide by his philosophies but they can’t, the short-term is too delicious and now it’s gone.
I’m no stock market maven. I go to the grocery and gas station, drycleaner and hairdresser. I know nothing about investments except that we make a living wage, live in a decent community and don’t hire “help” for shopping, cooking or cleaning.
We lead a simple life whose only complication is the dog. Yes we love her. We can’t travel unless she’s properly cared for. No clothes, umbrellas, featherbeds et al, but she has to be comfortable while we’re away.
And that’s it. I cook, and cook and write about cooking and cook some more. Tonight I made pizza. Made a mistake, bought two 5# bags unbleached flour when I meant one to be whole wheat. I do 2/3 unbleached white flour and 1/3 whole wheat and it makes such a difference rolling it out and in the crust and taste.
Power. I don’t have power over our house but our home. I do with my thoughts, community-mindedness, voicing concerns and living a quiet life. It helps that the love of my life, my best friend Jim, and dog Z complete the picture. Wishing you a wonderful mothers’ day to you and your Mom. Dee
