Who knows? My new feed store guy says last year it snowed here in June. We have a decent-sized deck (two, in fact, but the upstairs is not conducive to kitchen plantings because it’s too far to go to snip them. I may place a few flowers up there.
Right now we bought two 24″ long plastic containers with drip pans in which tomorrow I will plant basil, chives, dill, rosemary, thyme and sage. If it’s going to freeze at night I can take them inside or into the garage. Then I bought another faux pottery large round container for some salvia and yellow pansies.
We also picked up two cubic feet of potting soil with Miracle Gro (so I don’t have to buy a lot of stuff for a short stay), a watering can and hand shovel for the dirty work.
Yesterday I saw a marmot (large ground squirrel akin to woodchucks or groundhogs) and Jim saw it today and got some photos. Interesting rodent. I saw these two gorgeous crane-like birds yesterday that were a coppery brown with iridescent feathers on top of the body, and with a very thin, very long hooked bill for digging. It may even be a large type of sandpiper but I won’t know for sure until I get a bird book (I’m hooked, as long as they’re outside the windows 24-7) or stop by the Eco-Center to ask next week.
Today we ran errands and did my herb shopping. Tonight I’m making spaghetti and meatballs, Jim’s favorite, for dinner. Tomorrow I’ll do some paperwork, perhaps see the movie Earth, plant the herbs and flowers and finally start practicing guitar for Monday’s lesson. I know, I’ve been bad this week in that regard. Tomorrow night may be pork and shells, one of Mom’s old standards.
Seems perfect for Monthers’ Day, the first one my mother has missed after fifty years. Give your Mom a hug, make her a nice brunch or dinner, bring her flowers. And I hope your children do the same for you on the two “parent holidays.” Happy Mothers’ Day! Cheers, Dee
