Inaugural Luncheon Menu

Interesting choices. A seafood stew, definitely Southern. A brace of birds, coastal. And an apple-cinnamon sponge cake, as apples were a favorite of Abraham Lincoln. Interesting and very American.

I applaud Michelle Obama for making volunteerism one of her goals. It has been one of mine for years yet I’ve not found the right spot here as yet. I used to spend nearly every evening and every weekend volunteering and leading volunteers and creating projects for volunteers and I miss it.

Today is historic, one for the books. As to books, we don’t have kids but when I was a kid the Civil War was a chapter in a book. In the South, it’s life. It is still called the “war of Northern aggression” and I find it difficult to deal with people who see Blacks as slaves. Today, with Aretha (I cried), Rev. Lowery and others I hope we break that barrier forever.

I’ve always worked for civil and human rights, even before I did so publicly as the point-person on a legislative committee that dealt with these issues.

While we scrimp between jobs, serve notice to vacate and eat out of the pantry and freezer, at least I have hope for the future. May your tenure in Texas be long and fulfilling, former president Bush. May our banking execs stop the carnage, ditto auto execs.

Our President has a country to run, and has streaming video on his website. Too bad he won’t be allowed to use his Blackberry any more. My husband has a solution to that, btw, don’t tell the Secret Service. I’m waiting on Jim, looking for work, to give me the go-ahead on dinner.

I made banana bread that is cooling now, using over-ripe bananas. Perhaps I’ll freeze it and make bread pudding, as a hostess gift.

Life goes on. Cheers! Dee
