Jim read little but the “tomatometer” score (www.rottentomatoes.com) of Trans-Siberian before taking me to lunch and a movie last weekend. The film was beautifully done and the cinematography awesome in its presentation of the Siberian steppes (actually shot in Lithuania). The utter lack of morality of all but one clueless character and the gruesome scenes – I covered my eyes – made me nauseous. So when the film ended I told Jim he owes me two chick flicks (akin to one Jane Austen film and one equivalent of Memoirs of a Geisha).
This is how we do business in this household! I don’t shop, am not a clotheshorse, and cook all but two meals a week, on weekends when he wants to go out to lunch. But while he hooked me on Star Wars and Harry Potter so we’re even on those, an unintentional horror flick gets a demerit. I made him see The Queen, twice. Thank you Helen Mirren! Also for Calendar Girls, another film he got to see.
So I’ve decided to be kind and let him off with one chick flick, but with a catch: it’s the sing-along version of Mamma Mia. And I get to see the sun-soaked shores and crystal clear waters of Greece once again and perhaps get up the nerve to break down that lamb shoulder and make gyros for dinner on Sunday.
Cruel and unusual punishment? No way. I think it’ll be fun. We start with brunch tomorrow, socializing with our neighbors and chef CJ and will go from there. Enjoy your weekend. Dee
