Farewell, Beijing

I believe the Beijing Olympics are largely a success but relished the symbols of leadership go to what I hope is not called GB next time.

The judging in gymnastics, mens’ and womens’ was abysmal. The new rules are a joke as are the judges’ interpretations of these rules.

It is gratifying to see that someone has asked about the true age of these Chinese gymnasts, as they are supposed to be 16 the year of the Olympic competition. The USA and other countries suffer because we have democratic countries that do not control production of a series of passports and birth certificates.

It’s not a question of age mattering, it’s that there’s a legality of age that is obviously being forged to the detriment of other nations who have played by the rules and actually have tumblers who are 5′, 3″ and may actually have budded breasts by age 16.

I used to teach gymnastics at the studio of a former Olympic gymnast, and have been out of it many years but if one is 11-12 they can do a lot more tricks on a pass in floor exercise than a grown woman can do.

Some say if they’re physically able, let them compete in the Olympics no matter their age. I tend to think that talented young female gymnasts will be exploited in their youth. The boys tend to gain strength and talent over the years.

All this said, I must congratulate all the Olympic participants. As to gymnastics, my highest scores go to uneven bars and beam, for guys to still rings and high bar. Bravo!

I wish your coaches would let me cook for you for a while! I’ve fresh figs and strawberries, peaches, apples, stuff to make the most exquisite mac and cheese… D
