An Interesting Day

Over the past few months we’ve gotten to know a neighbor from Manchester, England and helped her through various disasters (sick pup, rain coming in from her ceiling). We’re friends even though I’m old enough to be her Mum.

Her brother and a friend have been visiting from the UK over the weekend and Katie loaned us her car yesterday because ours was in the shop. So today we had the boys over for a home-cooked breakfast of scrambled eggs, streaky bacon, toast and jam then drove them to the airport so they could continue their trek across our U.S. of A. Why not, our dollar is a sorry mess compared to the pound!

Very nice young gentlemen, they were, if very young. We gave them sights to see in our former state of Califonia. Or, as the Gov says, Kol-ee-FORN-ia. I must say I like the weather better in that part of the world, and DMV took a much better picture for my drivers’ license than my new one, such that my husband said “Don’t worry, dear, Nick Nolte’s looked worse.” Isn’t he a sweetheart?

I’m cheating for dinner tonight. Jim’s still on vacation so after breakfast and the airport run we went to lunch and a movie. So it’s fresh linguini and pesto, both store-bought. Hey, I did a lot today, and with my rapidly escalating number of hits on this blog, you evidently want something to read this evening to help you fall asleep….

Have a good one. Dee

  1. So dear, how did you like your night off?

  2. Yummo! Fresh Fettucine and Pesto sound great to me. We’ve have five new appliances installed in the kitchen since yesterday, so we look forward to giving them a spin. The gas stove top has one of those super burners, so we can do some high heat experimenting. Any ideas?

  3. To Joanie,

Get a good wok and try it out with a stir-fry.

If you have a great vent (if not get one) make two great steaks on a ridged grill pan without setting off the smoke alarms.

    I’ll think of more. Dee

  4. Even w/o all the bells and whistles, the GE microwave cooked the asparagus perfectly tonight when I pushed “vegetable.” The salesman asked how I used a microwave, and when I said “To make popcorn and warm beverages,” he didn’t try to sell me the top of the line. I appreciated that.
The stovetop vent exits to the outdoors, so we’ll try the steaks, per your suggestion..

  5. Attn: Joanie:
I believe Jean Anderson in the first microwave cookbook ever (darn, another reference book I missed) praised bacon as one thing the microwave does perfectly.
Not if you’re cooking for a crowd, in my mind. If you’re making four slices of bacon for two, place two unprinted paper towels on a microwave-safe plate and layer the bacon separately. Cover with another two paper towels.
Since neither of us are fully acquainted with your microwave, try cooking on 100% for 90 seconds, check, then add 30 second intervals until it is as crisp as you like it.
Plate the bacon with eggs and toast and jam and toss the towels, placing the plate in the dishwasher.
It’s the only way I make bacon every weekday for Jim! Take care, Dee
